Charlie Bolton has lived on Beauley Road in Southville since 1991 and became Bristol’s first Green councillor in 2006. Once elected, he achieved a number of successes, including getting the Council to set up and adopt 40 or so polices on climate change and another 40 or so on sustainable transport. He helped save the Bristol–Bath railway path from becoming a bus rapid transit route, and started the campaign to give local communities a greater say on how Section 106 money is spent.
At City Hall Charlie has twice been leader of the Green group of Councillors. He influenced Bristol Council to begin work on improving air quality, and has repeatedly called for better, more sustainable transport and more affordable housing in the city. Locally, with co-councillor Steve Clarke, Charlie has challenged development plans for excessive tall buildings in Bedminster Green and has been pressing the administration to take action to improve Southville’s parking situation, which has resulted in dangerously tight roads and pavements blocked up with illegally parked cars.
