Molly Scott Cato MEP has acknowledged she is ‘gutted’ after a disappointing result in Bristol West, a key target for the Green Party. She won 13% of the vote, while Labour’s Thangam Debbonaire retained the seat with a vastly increased majority, securing 66% of the vote.
Responding to the result, Molly Scott Cato said:
“I’m feeling pretty gutted but so proud of the campaign we ran. I’ve loved the hopefulness that the people of Bristol West have shown. Whether they chose Green or Corbyn, the people of Bristol West have rejected the hateful politics of the Tories.
“Bristol has for a long time been a hive of green thinking and activism and will continue to be so. The Green Party will continue to be the political voice for this green vision. We are in this for the long haul and our green councillors will continue carrying the green baton on behalf of Bristol residents and keep building on our success in the city.
“I am delighted that Caroline Lucas has been returned as MP for Brighton Pavilion to keep Green politics alive at Westminster. The increased vote share she received is testimony to just what an extraordinary and outstanding MP she is. I am so pleased she will be in parliament to continue pushing our distinctive policies on keeping the NHS fully public, scrapping nuclear weapons and fighting airport expansion and road building. She will also continue to champion electoral reform so that in future Greens can be fairly and proportionally represented in parliament.”
“As Green MEP for Bristol I will keep doing what Greens have been doing for decades. I will consistently fight for radical, hopeful and practical politics. It was thanks to the large Green vote in Bristol in the European elections that I became MEP for the South West and I pledge to continue to work in the European parliament in the interests of Bristol residents. The decision to leave the EU was resolutely rejected by Bristol West residents and I will do everything in my power to ensure that people have a say on the final Brexit deal through a ratification referendum.”
Molly Scott Cato, who has been Green MEP for the South West in 2014, will remain a member of the European Parliament until June 2019.
