Hinkley Point Protest

On the anniversary of the tsunami which threatened a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima plant in Japan, Bristol Green Party members joined Caroline Lucas MP, Jonathon Porritt and a 1,000 others to block the main road around the Hinkley Point nuclear complex in protest against Government’s plan for more nuclear power stations.

Hinkley Point is the first of eight proposed sites for nuclear new build to go ahead despite its location in a flood risk area. Protestors surrounded the perimeter and were shocked to observe the incursions EDF have made into the landscape before they even have planning permission.

Caroline Lucas told reporters:

"The Government is trying to bamboozle people into thinking the lights would go out without nuclear – the reality is that it is actually draining resources away from cleaner, greener, safer, cheaper forms of energy that could keep the lights on and our emissions down."
