We are delighted to announce that Jerome Thomas has been selected as the Green Party candidate for the West of England Metro Mayor. Jerome’s combination of political and business experience in the region makes him an experienced and capable candidate for Metro Mayor. Jerome can help lead the region towards a freer, fairer future.
Jerome was elected as the first Green councillor for Clifton in 2015, and is currently the Deputy leader of Bristol’s Green councillors and has worked on many important campaigns in the region; including campaigns for improving air quality and improvements to public transport. He recently proposed the successful motion committing the council to oppose Bristol airport expansion and has consistently challenged Bristol’s mayors on their management of Bristol Energy.
Before becoming a councillor, Jerome founded and led a successful business, Metro Safety Group, developing valuable experience for a Metro Mayor: including creating jobs, looking after customers and employees, innovating and building homes. Jerome knows the region well. He went to a state school in rural Gloucestershire, before studying economics and politics at Oxford University, and then raising a family in Bristol with his wife, Catherine, who works as a local GP.
Across the country Metro Mayors have important responsibilities for jobs, homes and transport.
Good implementation of green policies in these areas is key to our future health and prosperity. As we emerge from Covid and face the challenge of climate change, the green policies that were once considered impractical, are now mainstream and being taken seriously around the world. Often it is businesses and organisations from our region who are leading the way globally.
