We write as the eleven elected Green Party councillors on Bristol City Council to strongly advise the voters of Bristol to choose ‘Remain’ in the referendum on 23rd June.
Of course we know that the European Union could and should be improved and made more democratic but on the 23rd we all only have two choices; ‘in’ or ‘out’ and this choice will define our political landscape for a generation. As Greens we believe that Britain should be leading the way in reforming Europe rather than shouting from the sidelines.
Why do the Greens think we should stay in? Two of our central concerns are climate change and pollution and neither of those are constrained by national boundaries. This means that the efforts to govern and regulate these issues also need to be cross boundary. Our beaches, air and rivers will undoubtedly be much less protected if we leave.
Global business also know no boundaries; moving assets, profits and people at will. To have some control over them and ensure that we get tax justice we need to be in the EC. The same goes for consumer rights, fighting international crime and ensuring workers’ rights are maintained.
We know from recent polls that the vote is going to be horribly close and cities like Bristol could make or break the result-your vote will really count; please vote Remain!
