Mayoral Manifesto 2016 - Culture

Bristol is a great city and it can be so much better!

The Green Mayor and Bristol’s Green Party Council candidates wish to see Bristol continue as the leading Green city in the UK with a clear vision of a more sustainable, better future. Our particular focus in 2016 is on Clean and Affordable Energy, A Decent Home for Everyone, 21st Century Education and Skills and Sustainable Transport and Clean Air.

Tony Dyer - Green Party candidate for mayor

Bristol is a vibrant city with a clear sense of identity and a unique way of doing things. Bristolians have a natural dislike of authority and like doing things differently.

Hence, we have a thriving community sector – huge numbers of people who just get on with it. We also have a thriving cultural sector. Be it Upfest, the Harbour festival, or any one of the many local events up and down the city, things happen here.

Our cultural sector not only says something about what Bristol is, it also is of huge importance to the city. The sector as a whole has a turnover of around a billion pounds per year. It has a huge importance for the service industry in the city in terms of the numbers of people it brings here. There are a lot of direct and indirect jobs associated with it.

We believe it is the job of the council to enable the cultural sector to get on with it. We should support it and help it. These are extremely difficult times financially, but a Green mayor will do everything possible to retain the levels of council expenditure on the cultural sector.

Within that, we do believe there is a need to review where money is spent – with a view to ensuring we target areas of greater deprivation.
