Bristol Central MP Carla Denyer has called for local areas like Bristol to be given the power to set rent controls to tackle the housing crisis, as the government gives places new powers in its new Devolution Bill.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Carla said:
“Bristol City Council has had a cross party vote, including from Labour councillors, saying that they want the power to pilot rent controls. And recent results have come out that have shown that typical private renters in my constituency at Bristol Central spend 45% of their income on rents. That is not sustainable. This bill could offer the opportunity for that pilot.”
