Commenting on Jeremy Corbyn’s speech, Molly Scott Cato, Bristol’s Green MEP for South West England and a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Theresa May is plainly not the only senior politician who has mastered the art of can kicking, as Jeremy Corbyn’s speech today avoided providing definitive answers to any of the major questions facing the country over Brexit.
“Many Labour MPs, not to mention the party’s voters and members, will be horrified by the prospect that their party leader is still proposing to fight the next election as a supporter of Brexit. They know that no matter how you slice it or dice it, Brexit will leave us worse off, with less control and facing years of continued uncertainty. No wonder polls show that if Labour enables Brexit it will face mass voter defections to other parties, not least the Greens.
“It is time for Labour to face up to the biggest question facing our country and, if they cannot secure a general election, to follow its own conference policy and begin campaigning for a People’s Vote. The time for sitting on the fence is over, the time for leadership is now.”
