Responding to news that the High Court has ordered the government to publish its draft air pollution plan after the Metro Mayor election and ahead of the June 8th general election, Molly Scott Cato MEP said:
“Great news that the High Court has taken the government to task over their shocking disregard of the UK’s legal and moral obligation to take action on air pollution. This is a critical public health issue and it is outrageous the Tories ever thought they could use a general election as a smokescreen to block action.
“Let’s now see the government publish its plan to tackle this health crisis that needlessly kills 2000 people in the South West and accounts for almost 6% of all deaths in Bristol every year. I won’t hold my breath though. The Conservatives have constantly tried to water down regulations in Europe and have a dangerously cosy relationship with the car manufacturing industry and their lobbyists.
“Greens will continue to fight for clean air and full compliance with emission limits set down in EU law.”
Jerome Thomas, Deputy Leader of Bristol’s Green Councillors, said:
“Bristol and Bath Greens have led the way locally in highlighting our illegal and unsafe air quality and proposing appropriate action. We’re unsurprised that the Conservative Government has failed to address this health crisis with the urgency and seriousness that is needed, and relieved that the High Court has stepped in to hold the Government to account.”
