Bristol Green Party congratulates all the winners and nominees of this year’s Green Volunteer Awards hosted by Bristol Natural History Consortium.
Winners included: Bristol Wood Recycling Project, CHEESE project, Friends of Badock’s Wood and Life Cycle.
Councillor Gus Hoyt, who attended the awards ceremony, said:
“Yet again we see this brilliant award ceremony acknowledging the hard work people from all over the city to help make Bristol a greener place. From parks groups and conservation volunteers, to new start up organisations that help feed the homeless and recycle wood into furniture, we see these groups working in every part of Bristol to make lives better. The idea that “green” is something that only happens in a few small communities is simply not true. People are doing amazing things all over the city.”
The awards particularly noted the contributions made by young people. Students from the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England contributed more than 34 years of volunteer time (worth more than £1million) to Bristol’s year as European Green Capital. The University of Bristol’s Hungry Caterpillar Food Co-Op wining the Food Award, and UWE’s Leyth Hampshire taking the award for spirit.
Over the course of the evening, those presenting the awards shared their favourite memories of Bristol’s year as European Green Capital with the launch of Bristol Energy Company, the Millennium Square Whales, and Arcadia, amongst dozens of others being highlighted for praise.
Green Party councillor leader Ani Stafford-Townsend said:
“Bristol’s year as European Green capital has been a tremendous boost for awareness of environmental issues and new sustainable jobs. We now also need to see the appropriate details of Green Capital spending and a review of the funded projects so that we can properly assess what represented the best value for money. This will help us learn from our year as Green capital, so that we can get as much as possible from our year as a City of Learning in 2016 and City of Sport in 2017.”
