MP for Bristol Central Carla Denyer is working cross-party to champion the rights of migrant health and care workers in the UK.
Denyer has worked with Neil Duncan-Jordan, MP for Poole, on an Early Day Motion (EDM) highlighting the unfair and often exploitative relationships migrant workers are forced into with their employers.[1]
This follows a Parliamentary event organised by UNISON, where migrant workers told MPs of their experiences with unfair visa restrictions.
Denyer has joined UNISON in arguing that this dependency on a single employer fosters job insecurity and unsafe working conditions, as workers fear retaliation or deportation if they report concerns.
“We are calling on the government to introduce a Certificate of Common Sponsorship for health and care workers on Tier 2 visas,” said Denyer.
“This would allow these workers to change employers within the sector without the fear of losing their job or legal status. It’s vital for the wellbeing of these workers, who are so fundamental to our health and care sector.”
The EDM acknowledges the impact of these restrictive policies on migrant workers’ mental health, and advocates for the introduction of reforms that will empower them and break the exclusive link between a worker’s visa and a single employer.
Denyer is urging the government to take action on this issue as part of broader efforts to improve the UK’s social care system and protect the workers who play a vital role in its success.
Kerry Baigent, UNISON South West regional secretary, added:
“Migrant health and care workers are the backbone of our services, yet restrictive visa conditions leave them vulnerable to exploitation and insecurity. These workers deserve fair treatment, job security, and the ability to speak out against poor conditions without fear of retaliation.
“The introduction of a Certificate of Common Sponsorship would be a step in the right direction, allowing workers to change employers within the sector while maintaining their visa status. UNISON is proud to stand alongside migrant workers and MPs like Carla Denyer in calling for urgent reforms to protect those who care for us all.”
