The Green Party in Bristol has won 34 seats in the city’s local elections, strengthening their position as the largest party in the city. Today’s gains also see them become the largest group of Green councillors to ever be elected at a local election in the UK.
The Green Party dominance at the city’s local elections is another sign that the Greens are on track to win their top General Election target of Bristol Central where party co-leader, Carla Denyer, is the candidate. Greens won all 14 of the council seats in the new Bristol Central constituency, winning two off of Labour.
Carla said;
“At this election the people of Bristol have turned to the Green Party to deliver the change that this city needs. The people of this city know that we don’t have to accept politics as usual – something better is possible, if we vote for it.
Cllr Emma Edwards, Leader of the Green Group said;
“Today, people across Bristol have demonstrated that they want change in how our city is run, and that they trust hard working Green councillors to create that change.
“Politics in Bristol will change from today. As leader of this group, I look forward to collaborating with councillors from all parties under the new committee model; we recognise that no one party has a monopoly on good ideas. Together and with the communities that we serve, we can make the best possible decisions for Bristol.”
The first Full Council meeting is on the 21st of May, where all 70 councillors will vote for Leader of the council. The Green Party nominee is Cllr Tony Dyer,
Cllr Tony Dyer said;
“If I am elected as Leader of the Council, I will work collaboratively with the new committees, members of all parties, council officers and, most importantly, the communities of Bristol, to develop practical solutions with social and environmental values at their centre.”
